Time to grab the kids, a jacket, earplugs — and maybe an umbrella — because the annual Pulaski Fire Department Fire Prevention Parade returns Thursday.

The parade, which has been held during Fire Prevention Week for the past 74 years, is a favorite of area children, most of which enjoy the sounds of screaming sirens. It’s followed by dinner at the fire department for parade participants only.

An annual parade is just one of many events PFD holds during Fire Prevention Week, which runs Oct. 9-15 this year. The theme of this year’s prevention week and parade is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape at fpw.org.”

Fire departments come from throughout much of southwest Virginia to participate each year, but other emergency services also take part. Children from various sports teams and agencies also participate.

The parade gets underway at 7 p.m. in front of Dawg House on East Main Street (Route 99) and proceeds west. At the fork of Main and Third streets, it continues against normal traffic flow onto Main Street, then turns left onto Jefferson Avenue and disbands at Pulaski Fire Department.
